EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championships, 2013

EUROSAF, in association with the Federação Portuguesa de Vela and Clube Náutico de Tavira, announce that the entry deadline for the EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championships is extended to 30th June, 2013.

Following discussions between Federação Portuguesa de Vela and EUROSAF last week, it was agreed to extend the deadline for entries to the above event until 30th June. Entries to date have been steady, with some 80 boats and in excess of 100 sailors having registered, but it seems a number of countries, who have previously stated their intention of sending their young sailors, have yet to complete the formalities.

To enter your sailors, team and coaches, you first need to register with Tavira Sailing by going to www.eurosafyouthsailing.org Once registered, it is possible to enter on-line, so there are no forms to complete. It could not be easier.

EUROSAF Match Racing, European Open Championship, 2013

Sails of the White Nights – National Congress Palace Cup

Andrew Arbuzov is crowned EUROSAF Open Match Racing Champion 2013 and winner of the Sails of the White Nights – National Congress Palace Cup

Despite the best efforts of the wind, the Race Committee met the challenge of completing the Championship in St Petersburg on Sunday, to find the European Open Match Race Champion of 2013. In excess of 60 races were completed over the four days of the championship and the outcome was a win for Andrew Arbuzov from Russia.

To complete the event at all was a fantastic achievement on the part of the Race Committee, because, with very few exceptions, wind speeds seldom exceeded 10 knots and with the current of the River Neva, the boats made slow progress. There were times in the day when the wind almost disappeared altogether, resulting in much waiting around for sailors and officials alike. Having taken three days to complete the first round-robin stage, the race committee decided they had no option but to abandon the quarter final stage and jump straight to the semi-finals start on Sunday morning. Arbuzov, who had topped the leader board after the round-robin stage, was paired against his fellow countryman Sergey Musikhin, while in the second semi-final Simone Ferrarese from Italy was drawn against Eric Monnin from Switzerland. The wind, however, took control, and after completing just four races, with each crew winning one race, the Race Committee took the decision to cancel the semi-final and go straight to the final.

With the first regatta in the EUROSAF Champions Sailing Cup now finished, attention turns to Medemblik in The Netherlands, where the Delta Lloyd Regatta commences on 21st May

Organised by the European Sailing Federation (EUROSAF), in association with five of the major regatta organisers in Europe, the new series offers Olympic, aspiring Olympic and Paralympic sailors, an opportunity to compete against the best sailors from around the world. Entries have been brisk for a new series, in a post-Olympic year, and include several Olympic medallists and a good number of world champions.

So far, approaching 1,000 sailors have entered across the first four regattas, including some famous names, so the standard of competition will be high.

New European University Sailing Championship

EUROSAF encourages sailing, in all its forms, amongst younger people and to this end arranged the first EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championship in Aarhus, Denmark in 2012. The previous year they introduced the EUROSAF Match Racing, Youth European Championship, which was held in Marsala, in Sicily. Now, in 2013, we are delighted to be adding a third event for young sailors, the EUROSAF University Sailing, European Match Racing Championship.

In collaboration with CUS Trento and Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro, under the auspices of the International University Sports Federation (FISU) and in conjunction with the Centro Universitario Sportivo Italiano (CUSI), and the Italian Sailing Federation (FIV), The European Sailing Federation (EUROSAF) has today published the Notice of Race for this exciting new event.
