As fleet racing comes to an end and we move towards the medals races, some sailors are looking confident to win gold, while others still have a lot to do.  It will be an interesting day on Friday.

Yet another glorious day greeted the athletes competing in the EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championship, but this time the wind was not so kind, initially blowing lightly from the north and then slowing coming around to the south west, at the same time increasing a little in strength.  It was, however, not an easy wind to read, which was reflected in some of the results. Because of the changing wind, the start of racing was delayed a little, but not as much as was feared earlier in the day, when the forecast suggested it might be a late afternoon start.

Many of the best young sailors in Europe have gathered in Tavira, Portugal, to compete in the EUROSAF Youth Sailing, Europe Championship, for which racing starts on Monday 5th August. Today, Sunday, there has been a practice race, in what were fantastic conditions, sunshine and 15 knots of wind! This is the second occasion EUROSAF have organised this multi-discipline Continental Championship for sailors under the age of 19 (on 31st December this year), and using the same equipment as that utilised in the ISAF Youth Sailing, World Championship.

Some 14 European countries have sent their sailors to compete in eight different disciplines, including girls and boys single-handed and double-handed dinghies, plus sailboards and a high performance dinghy. The equipment being used is the Laser Radial, International 420, RS:X sailboard and the 29er skiff.

EUROPEAN UNIVERSITY MATCH RACE CHAMPIONSHIP

Universities from Italy, France, Germany, Slovenia, Poland, Russia and Great Britain, met under the burgee of Associazione Vela Lago di Ledro, Italy, and at the invitation of the European Sailing Federation (EUROSAF), to compete for the European University Match Racing Championship. Nine teams competed for the title EUROSAF European Champion, on this the first occasion the championship has been held.

A unique aspect of the championship was that it also incorporated some two-boat team racing, a fairly new discipline within the sport of sailing, but one which is rapidly gaining a foothold. This sub-section of the championship was eventually won by the German team from Hamburg University, led by Florian Haufe, and all who competed recognised this as an enjoyable distraction and fun experience.

EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championships, 2013

EUROSAF, in association with the Federação Portuguesa de Vela and Clube Náutico de Tavira, announce that the entry deadline for the EUROSAF Youth Sailing, European Championships is extended to 30th June, 2013.

Following discussions between Federação Portuguesa de Vela and EUROSAF last week, it was agreed to extend the deadline for entries to the above event until 30th June. Entries to date have been steady, with some 80 boats and in excess of 100 sailors having registered, but it seems a number of countries, who have previously stated their intention of sending their young sailors, have yet to complete the formalities.

To enter your sailors, team and coaches, you first need to register with Tavira Sailing by going to www.eurosafyouthsailing.org Once registered, it is possible to enter on-line, so there are no forms to complete. It could not be easier.
